With the publication of my new book, Finding Your Style in Pastel, I have decided to inaugurate a new blog. Writing the book has brought more clarity to my work and I want to share my successes and frustrations with others. Color is still the motivating force for my paintings, but I know that a weak composition will doom the painting to failure. So I always begin with composition and continue to struggle with making changes from the established subject matter. More recently I have been focusing on light and atmospheric conditions, from bright sunny days, to late afternoon light or fog on the Maine coast.
While I am primarily a landscape painter, with a focus on domestic architecture, I also enjoy pure landscape, as well as still life and the occasional portrait of my cat. I am not the kind of painter who can keep to one subject for very long, just as I don’t use the same surfaces or techniques on a routine basis. I like the challenges and joys of working with different subject matter and a variety of materials.
Have I found my style? People say they always recognize my paintings, so I guess I have. But, like so many others, I am always seeking to improve and explore new possibilities. I hope to share these in this blog. I welcome comments and discussion.
Sorry Jean. Can’t find “activate” to start receiving the blog. ???

Hello Jean:
Wonderful looking blog. The book you wrote is great…so this blog will be a welcome addition to the book. Thank you.
Thanks Sandy. I have a number of posts lined up, but thought I’d wait a few hours anyway!
